if not for exceptional teachers, building exceptional things within it's walls."

Mrs. Cecilia Barbosa, Supervisor

ECE, BA (edu)

Earning her ECE certificate in 1985, Mrs. Barbosa  has been with the Colwell Nursery School and Kindergarten  since 1990, coming to us all the way from Peru!  For the past several years, she has spent her time working in our upstairs classroom, with our Kindergarten students.  A centre point in the classroom, Mrs. Barbosa oozes creativity and inspiration.  She is continually inventing new and wonderful activities for the children, and challenging them to think and imagine in new ways.  Her teaching style, like a fuse is to dynamite, seems to create an excitement in her audiences that spawns an explosion of wonder and discovery.  She puts great importance on instilling in the children the love for learning that she, herself has developed, and which drives her to further her own educational endeavors in her own time.  Mrs. Barbosa is an important piece of the classroom environment and of the Colwell Team.

Mrs. Anne Vandermey, Teacher

NNEB

Mrs. Vandermey has been with the Colwell Nursery School and Kindergarten since 2001, following time spent teaching in other childcare centres, and nanny experience in a private home.  Educated in Great Britain, she holds both an NNEB diploma, and an ECE Equivalency Certificate.  For the past several years, Mrs. Vandermey has made her home in our Nursery School classroom downstairs, working with our younger students.  She is a committed professional, who consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty to ensure each child receives the best possible care.  A mother of three, her concern for her students is instinctive.  She has a certain kindness and gentleness about her that makes her approachable and un-intimidating to otherwise timid students.  She is often the sun after a terrible storm to a post-melt down child.  Mrs. Vandermey has an exceptional ability to keep the attention of her young audiences captive, whether during storytime or while building a puzzle on the floor, by always making the task at hand fun and interesting... and the children adore her for it!  She is an integral part of the Colwell Team.

Mrs. Lee Scriven, Teacher

Mrs. Scriven came to the Colwell Nursery School and Kindergarten in 1997, bringing with her a variety of experience working with children of all abilities.  She has an exceptional talent for teaching, which she willingly shares with the Tourettes Syndrome Foundation of Canada, the Pickering Swim Program, and a myriad of other functions and organizations in her spare time.  For the past several years, she has spent her time working in our upstairs classroom, with our Kindergarten students.  In the classroom, Mrs. Scriven's middle name is FUN.  Armed with her playful sense of humour, she battles through otherwise humdrum tasks, leaving carnage of sore faces from smiling, and tummies from laughing in her academic wake- she spares no one!  She interjects creativity and enthusiasm into everything that she does, and the school is a better place for it.  Learning through play is an important part of what we do here at Colwell.

Mrs. Sue Turner, Teacher

Mrs. Turner has been with the Colwell Nursery School and Kindergarten since 1988, ever since the school was first opened under the Colwell name.  During this time, she has gained extensive experience working with children of all backgrounds and abilities, her skill being surpassed only by her love of the job.  Over the years, she has developed a particular fondness of working with the younger students in our Nursery School classroom, where she currently calls home.  Mrs. Turner has a wonderful gentleness and light-heartedness about her that seems to bring out the best in children.  Like gravity, they are drawn to her fantastic sense of humor and her contagious laugh, which adds to the undeniable electricity in the air, sparking even the quietest and most reserved children to life!  A musician herself, she often teaches through music and songs, which according to parents, are echoed by the children long after they've left school for the day.  Mrs. Turner is an important part of the Colwell Team.
